Parental control and restrictions PIN are two concepts some of us might have struggled with in the past. They refer to the same feature: limiting permission to what gets installed or accessed on your devices by other users (children, guests, friends, housemates, and even employees). A restrictions passcode is really useful for shared devices, but if you forget it, you might have to consider resetting and deleting contents from your device just to be able to use it again.

Not an ideal solution at all! Is there any way you can reset your passcode to 1234, for example, in just a few clicks? Yes. No tech knowledge needed, no time wasted figuring out how long it will take to reset your devices, no trip to the Genius Bar.

Restrictions PIN

A forgotten pincode is the second most common cause for data loss. We have covered this problem many times in the past, and wrote several articles.

We know getting back forgotten passcodes is important to you, so we made a handy guide to help you recover or reset your iPhone restrictions passcode, even if you have the latest iOS 10 installed on your device.

The iPhone Backup Extractor allows you to use two methods to get your restrictions PIN back:

  • recover the restrictions passcode (useful for both iTunes and iCloud backups)
  • reset the restrictions PIN from an iTunes encrypted or unencrypted backup, then restore the modified backup file on your iPhone.

Both methods can be used for iPhones and iPads running on iOS 10.

How to recover your restrictions passcode from an iTunes or iCloud backup

Depending on your backup type, the method is slightly different:

  1. Make an iTunes backup and download it on your computer to the default location or to a new folder.
  2. Download and install the iPhone Backup Extractor for Windows or Mac, then open it.
  3. If you want to use an iCloud backup instead of an iTunes one, use this guide to see how to download it on your computer. Notice that you need a subscription plan if you want to use an iCloud backup to get your restrictions passcode back. Once the file is downloaded, it can be utilized by the iPhone Backup Extractor like any usual iTunes backup file.iCloud backup
  4. Now, on the left side of the application, you’ll see a list of backups. Select the backup with your passcode.
  5. Go to “Utilities” menu, click on “Recover restrictions PIN” then click on the “Start” button and wait.

  6. In a few seconds, your iOS 10 restrictions passcode will be recovered. For demo purposes, the PIN recovered in the screenshot below is 1234, but this should be the passcode you forgot.Restrictions PIN set

How to reset your restrictions PIN

This method should be used only for iTunes backup files, even if the iTunes is an encrypted one. The entire procedure can be split into two parts: the first one is the password resetting, the second one is the iTunes backup restoration.

Here are the steps required to reset your iPhone parental controls on iOS 10, from an iTunes backup:

  1. Generate an iTunes backup on your computer.
  2. Get the iPhone Backup Extractor from this page and install it. Once installed, open the application.
  3. Select your previously downloaded iTunes backup file from the left side and click on “Utilities” then on “Reset restrictions PIN”.Reset restrictions PIN iTunes
  4. A popup will ask you whether you want to continue the process or not. Make sure you know what you’re doing: the iTunes backup password will be changed. Click on “Yes” and wait a few seconds. Your new passcode will be “1234”.Popup reset passcode
  5. Now you have to restore the modified iTunes backup on your iPhone. Just connect it to your computer and restore it using iTunes. Once restarted, your iPhone’s parental controls passcode will become “1234” and you will be able to unlock it.Succesfull reset restrictions passcode

Both methods are used for any iOS device: iPhone 4, 4S, 5, 5S, 5SE, 6, iPhone 6S, 7, 7S Plus, 7S and iPads. As soon as the new iPhone model is launched, our team will work on supporting the new device as well. We will cover that update in a future post.
