Just a few moments ago, Apple has officially released iOS 8 to the public and millions of us will download and upgrade our iPhones or iPads with the new operating system.

Apple official iOS 8 release

iOS 8 requires 5GB+ to update? You need to master up the free space!

As you already know, the new iOS 8 is very different than last year's iOS 7 and comes with numerous new features like interactive notifications, third party widgets and keyboards, Home Kit, iCloud Drive, iMessages and Photos improvements. With the new iPhone 6 and 6 plus you will also be able to use Apple Pay and record slow motion videos at 240fps.

If you are getting ready to update your iPhone or iPad to iOS 8, make sure you have enough free space. Previous iOS updates required about 1 GB of free space, but some users are reporting that updating to iOS 8 needs up to 6 GB of free space.

If you have the 16 GB iPhone or iPad version, it's very possible that you will not be able to download the update to iOS 8 and you will get a warning message, like the one from the screenshot below.

The required free space number is very different from one device to another, and even though in the Settings application you are told that the update requires 1.9GB, you will notice that this is not nearly enough. So what should you do to update your iDevice with iOS 8? Before deleting data to free up space, you should first create a backup of your iDevice with iTunes or iCloud, just to make sure you will not permanently lose your data. Once your data is backed up, here are some solutions that might help you install iOS 8.

  • Check what's using the most space on your iPhone or iPad. Launch the Settings app and tap on General > Usage and then on Manage Storage.
  • If you have lots of photos, you can use iTunes to export them to your PC or Mac, and once iOS 8 will be installed on your iPhone or iPad, you can sync them back with iTunes. You can do the same for music and any other such data you can easily restore with iTunes after.
  • Remove large applications, and install them again after the iOS 8 is complete.
  • Try to update your iPhone or iPad using iTunes. Instead of going for a software update directly from your iDevice, you can do this using iTunes. Sync your iPhone or iPad with your USB cable and launch iTunes. You will then be prompted to update the iOS. When doing a software update with iTunes, iOS will require less space because the software will first be downloaded into your computer instead of your iPhone or iPad.

To know before upgrading your iPhone or iPad to iOS 8

We all get fired up when Apple releases a new product or a new iOS. The news are everywhere and it's hard not to get excited when everybody is talking about the new release. These are some of the things you should know before upgrading to iOS 8:

  • Check if your iPhone or iPad is compatible with the new operating system. Your old device might have problems handling the new upgrade. With iOS 8, Apple has decided to leave behind the old iPhone 4 and the first generation iPad. Therefore iOS will be compatible only with iPhone 4s, 4, 5, 5c, 5s, 6, 6 plus and iPad 2, 3, 4, Air, Mini and Mini with retina display.

  • Backup your iPhone or iPad with the latest version of iTunes or with iCloud before hitting the upgrade button. If you have an old iDevice, your iTunes backup is corrupted or you have problems restoring your backup, you can use the iPhone Backup Extractor to recover data from your iTunes or iCloud backup.

  • Once you upgrade to iOS 8, you can't downgrade to a previous iOS version. You'll have to love it or live with it.

  • The new iOS 8 feature called Continuity will not be available for iPhone 4s, iPad 2 and iPad 3 users.
