What to do when you deal with a corrupt iTunes backup

Often corruption occurs when an iOS update fails or simply because of a power failure in the middle of the backing up process, predominantly a backup gets corrupted when something out of the ordinary occurs during the process.

There are also cases in which you simply cannot restore from previous iTunes backups, especially if there is a difference in iOS versions.

Your iTunes backup is corrupt, so how can you still extract your data from it?

iPhone Backup Extractor opens backups and retrieves data from these files, but what if the backup is corrupted (data categories says zero) or fails to open? Well, iPhone Backup Extractor can help.

If the data is still in the backup and a missing or corrupt manifest is causing the issue, you can manually identify the files inside your backup and those you need to recover. For example Contacts and SMS messages databases can be found in the backup folder and using the File menu in the application, you can convert these databases into useful files.

How to retrieve your Contacts and SMS messages from a corrupt backup

  1. Locate your backup on your PC or Mac. You can read more on backups locations in our previous article on where are the iPhone backups stored and what are the files inside a backup.
  2. Identify your sms.db file – Backup filename: 3d0d7e5fb2ce288813306e4d4636395e047a3d28 or your AddressBook.sqlite.db file – Backup filename: 31bb7ba8914766d4ba40d6dfb6113c8b614be442 and put them on the desktop
  3. Open iPhone Backup Extractor, go to top Menu>File>Convert Messages DB to HTML or Convert call history DB to CSV

  4. Convert messages DB to HTML
  5. Browse for the file identified in step number 2. It might be easy to make a copy of this file to your desktop first
  6. You should now have two readable HTML or CSV files for your SMS messages and Contacts
